Botswana: Surge in Malaria Cases in Recent Weeks

Botswana has reported a significant increase in malaria cases over the past four weeks, as stated by the Ministry of Health on Tuesday.

The rise in cases across this southern African nation is attributed to recent heavy rainfall, which has created favorable conditions for the breeding of mosquitoes that transmit malaria. Oratile Mfokeng-Selei, the acting director of health services at the ministry, explained these findings in a public notice.

Since the outbreak began in the Okavango District (northwest), it has spread to several other districts, including Ngami, Ghanzi, Chobe, Tutume, and Boteti.

Malaria cases have also emerged in non-endemic areas such as Ghanzi, Serowe, Francistown, Gaborone, and Mahalapye, the official noted.

The ministry is closely monitoring the situation and urges all public health facilities to remain vigilant to ensure adequate care and proper management of suspected malaria cases. Earlier this year, Botswana experienced heavy rains that resulted in flooding across many regions of the country.
