Belgium to Recognize Palestine at the UN General Assembly

Belgium will officially recognize the State of Palestine during the upcoming United Nations General Assembly in September, announced Belgian Foreign Minister Maxime Prévot on Tuesday.
“Palestine will be recognized by Belgium at the UN session! Strong sanctions are being imposed on the Israeli government,” stated the head of Belgian diplomacy on X.
More than a dozen Western governments have urged other nations to acknowledge the State of Palestine at the UN General Assembly, scheduled to take place from September 9 to 23 in New York.
“In light of the humanitarian tragedy unfolding in Palestine, particularly in Gaza, and in response to the violence committed by Israel in violation of international law, Belgium felt compelled to make decisive actions to increase pressure on the government of Israel,” he explained.
“Belgium will join the signatory countries of the New York Declaration, which outlines the path toward a two-state solution and thereby recognizing it,” the minister added.
Canada has also indicated its intention to support a Palestinian state, while the United Kingdom has similarly announced its plans for recognition.
Currently, three-quarters of UN member states recognize the State of Palestine.
