Bangladesh : Sheikh Hasina resigns and flees the country

DHAKA – Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina resigned on Monday and left the country, following violent anti-government protests and deadly clashes that killed hundreds on both sides.

Army Chief General Waker-Uz-Zaman announced Hasina’s resignation in a televised address, indicating that an interim government will be established.

Media reports said Hasina fled in a military helicopter with her sister towards India, across the eastern border of Bangladesh.

Before the resignation, protestors had planned to march towards Dhaka, aiming to topple Sheikh Hasina despite the “shoot-on-sight” curfew imposed on the capital.
