Bangladesh Imposes Curfew as Anti-Quota Protests Intensify

Over 110 people killed this week in the Bangladesh capital Dhaka, as a result of confrontations between the government forces and students protesting against the quota job system.

As violance exacerbated leading to a constantly raising death toll, the government imposed a nationwide curfew, with army soldiers patrolling the streets of Dhaka. In addition to suspending internet and text message services since Thursday.

The controversial quota system revolves around reserving 30% of jobs for family members of freedom fighters in the 1971 war of independence from Pakistan, as well as people from underdeveloped districts. Accordingly, anti-quota student protests call to abolish the law for more job opportunities, as the country faces alarming unemployment rates.
