Azzouz Nasri Elected Speaker of the Algerian Council of the Nation

ALGIERS – Azzouz Nasri was elected on Monday as Speaker of the Algerian Council of the Nation (upper house of Parliament), as part of the 2025 midterm renewal of the Council.

The election took place during a public plenary session dedicated to the inauguration of the new members and the election of the Council’s Speaker.

Azzouz Nasri, the nominee of the presidential third parliamentary group, was unanimously endorsed by all parliamentary groups represented in the Council of the Nation to serve as Speaker of the Council, succeeding Salah Goudjil.

This appointment follows the midterm elections for the elected members of the Council of the Nation, held on March 9, with the final results announced by the Constitutional Court on March 13.

“I stand before you today, deeply aware of the weighty responsibility you have entrusted to me in presiding over this esteemed Council. It is a duty that demands commitment, discipline, and unwavering adherence to its ethical principles and responsibilities,” Nasri said following his endorsement as Speaker of the Algerian Upper House, adding, “At the outset of this constitutional milestone, I express my sincere appreciation and deep gratitude to President Abdelmadjid Tebboune for his steadfast commitment to strengthening the role of the legislative authority within the framework of governance.”
