Azerbaijan: Ruling party maintains dominant position in Parliament

BAKU – The ruling New Azerbaijan Party (YAP) won the snap parliamentary elections held Sunday according to initial results, announced Mazahir Panakhov, head of the Central Election Commission, on Monday morning following the count from 5,895 polling stations.

Preliminary results suggest that candidates from the New Azerbaijan Party have secured around 68 of the 125 seats in the unicameral parliament, based on 91% of the votes counted.

A range of small parties and independents have won nearly all of the remaining seats.

Voting concluded at 7:00 PM, with 2,196,711 individuals casting their ballots, and the Central Election Commission reported that the voter turnout was 37.27%.
