Azerbaijan’s Defense Ministry reported on Monday that Armenian forces fired at its military positions in the western Lachin region overnight. The attack took place near the villages of Zabukh and Jaghazur between 10:00 and 10:10 p.m. local time (1800-1810GMT) on Sunday.
The ministry confirmed that Armenian forces had targeted Azerbaijani positions multiple times in recent days, noting that these incidents had been officially registered.
A later statement on Monday indicated another instance of fire from Armenian forces at Azerbaijani positions near Zabukh at approximately 2:10 p.m. local time (1210GMT).
Armenia’s Defense Ministry, however, denied the Azerbaijani claims, labeling them as inaccurate and out of touch with reality.
These incidents are the first such reports of cross-border clashes since September 2024. The longstanding tension between Azerbaijan and Armenia dates back to 1991 when Armenian forces occupied Karabakh and adjacent regions, including Lachin.
Azerbaijan reclaimed most of the territory in a 44-day war in 2020, which ended with a Russian-brokered peace agreement. The conflict officially concluded in 2023 with Azerbaijan asserting full sovereignty over Karabakh following an “anti-terrorist operation” and the surrender of separatist forces.
