AU-PSC Reaffirms Commitment to Children’s Education in Conflict Zones Under Algeria’s Presidency

The African Union (AU) Peace and Security Council (PSC) reiterated its commitment to safeguarding the right to education for all children, especially in regions of the continent affected by conflict and crises, in a statement following its public session held in Addis Ababa under Algeria’s leadership.

During this session, titled “Education in Conflict Situations,” the council expressed profound concern about the negative impact of armed conflicts in Africa on education and educational systems. It called on member states to strictly adhere to the implementation of international and continental conventions aimed at protecting children and preserving their fundamental right to education.

The PSC further emphasized the need for member states to enhance efforts to ensure inclusive education for everyone and to protect educational systems and institutions amid instability and armed conflicts across the continent.

Moreover, the council highlighted the importance of strengthening protections for children in conflict situations and providing necessary support to address the challenges of ensuring the right to education and access to schooling, particularly for children in refugee camps throughout Africa.

Additionally, the PSC commended the significant contributions of Professor Mohammed Belhocine, the outgoing Commissioner for Education, Science, Technology, and Innovation, especially regarding advancements made within the framework of the AU’s 2024 theme on education. His efforts have played a vital role in promoting education for all in Africa, even in challenging contexts such as crisis and conflict zones, through the development of educational systems and enhancement of skills across the continent.
