AU PSC Holds Meeting on Situation in Somalia

The Peace and Security Council (PSC) of the African Union (AU) held a meeting to review developments in Somalia and the progress of operations by the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM), with discussions focusing on recent political developments in Somalia, the Mission’s complex financial situation, and ways to address it.
In this regard, the Algeria’ Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the African Union (AU), Mohamed Khaled, reaffirmed Algeria’s support for the stability of this brotherly country and its ongoing commitment to peace efforts, emphasizing Algeria’s willingness, as a member of the AU PSC, to continue to support the Republic of Somalia in its sustained efforts to combat terrorism and consolidate peace, in coordination with regional and international partners.
The Algerian diplomat also noted the importance of finding consensual solutions to the financial difficulties facing AUSSOM, in order to enable the Somali government to take charge of security management, recalling the responsibility of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) to ensure sustainable funding for this mission.
In addition, the African Union Commission (AUC) has proposed several options for the future of AUSSOM that could help Somalia establish stability and peace, as well as strengthen its institutions. These proposals will be reviewed at a later date by the countries participating in this continental mission and by the AU Peace and Security Council’s Military Staff Committee before being submitted to the PSC.
The African Union Peace and Security Council is expected to issue a communiqué on this matter shortly.
