AU-EU Summit: Participants Champion Peoples’ Right to Self-Determination

AU-UE-SummitThe joint declaration of the 7th African Union-European Union Summit, on 24-25 November 25 in Luanda, Angola, emphasized the need to strengthen the collective commitment to the right of peoples to self-determination and the peaceful resolution of conflicts, as well as respect for freedoms.
The declaration defends fundamental freedoms and gender equality, stressing the need to support efforts to combat all forms of segregation, exclusion, and violence. It recommends greater involvement in defending the rights of women, young people, and children and a concrete commitment to ending armed conflicts.
The document also calls for the reform of international institutions to address global, regional, and national challenges collectively, and calls for the application of United Nations (UN) principles, including those relating to respect for the sovereignty of nations and the right to self-determination.
The signatories of the declaration voiced their deep concern about current humanitarian challenges and violence against humanitarian workers and civilians. They also expressed concern about the difficulties in delivering humanitarian aid to populations in need.
They reaffirmed their willingness to take action to improve the humanitarian situation in Africa and to support mechanisms for the protection of refugees, migrants, displaced persons, and host communities.
The participants reiterated their willingness to contribute to implementing the “Joint Vision 2030,” a strategic framework aimed at fostering cooperation between Africa and Europe, adopted at the previous summit.
