Attaf to AL24 News: Realism Led Washington to Separate Its National Position from Its Role as Mediator

ALGIERS – Algerian Minister of State, Minister of Foreign Affairs, National Community Abroad, and African Affairs, Ahmed Attaf, said there is a sense of realism in the trajectory of the new UN resolution.

“What strengthens our sense of reassurance is an important and notable observation, that President Trump’s advisor, Mr. Massad Boulos, stated in a television interview that ‘autonomy’ is no longer the sole framework for resolving the Sahrawi issue, and that the field is now open to alternatives,” Ahmed Attaf told AL24 News in an interview aired Sunday evening.

“President Trump’s advisor said that the agreement must be reached between the two parties to the conflict, and this is something we agree with him on, especially regarding the necessity of direct negotiations between the Sahrawis and the Moroccans,” he said.

Attaf noted that in all his meetings with U.S. officials, particularly advisor Massad Boulos, he has emphasized that the solution to the Western Sahara issue can only be achieved through the two parties to the conflict: the Kingdom of Morocco and the Polisario Front.

He pointed out that “the United States has its national position on the Western Sahara issue, but today it seeks to play the role of mediator, which requires setting aside its national stance and finding a solution acceptable to both sides, one around which consensus can be built—this is what we infer from the statements of the U.S. presidential advisor in his television interview.”

“There is realism in the course of the new UN resolution, and realism personally compels me to note that the United States has begun to distinguish between its national position and its role as a mediator in this process, by showing willingness to work with the United Nations and under its framework, since the UN has rules and regulations that govern its actions in addressing colonial issues,” the Algerian minister said.
