Attaf Highlights Tripartite Mechanism’s Role in Resolving Libyan Crisis

Algerian Minister of State, Minister of Foreign Affairs, National Community Abroad, and African Affairs, Ahmed Attaf, stressed the importance of the Tripartite Neighboring Countries Mechanism (Algeria, Tunisia, and Egypt) in addressing the Libyan crisis.

In a press statement following his reception by Tunisian President Kaïs Saïed on Monday, Attaf noted that the President of the Republic, Abdelmadjid Tebboune, and President Kaïs Saïed remain deeply committed to the security of their shared regional space.

“This underscores the significance of today’s gathering in Tunisia,” Attaf said, “namely, convening a new session of the Tripartite Neighboring Countries Mechanism to discuss the latest developments in Libya.”

He added that this session aims to reactivate the mechanism following previous meetings in Cairo and Algiers, allowing the three nations to speak with “a single, unified voice” on the necessity of ending the long-standing crisis.

“Our sole aim is to support our Libyan brothers, helping them overcome the crisis, reunite, and unify their positions to achieve a lasting political settlement,” he said.

Attaf emphasized that Algeria, Tunisia, and Egypt are the nations most affected by the repercussions of the Libyan conflict. Consequently, they remain the most committed to preserving Libya’s unity, its territory, people, and institutions.

“I expressed to His Excellency President Kaïs Saïed our deep appreciation for Tunisia’s initiative in convening this meeting, which included the participation of the UN Secretary-General’s Special Representative for Libya,” Attaf added.

In this regard, he reaffirmed that Libya’s security is inseparable from the stability of its neighbors. “It is our responsibility to help Libyans take ownership of the political solution to their crisis, ensuring it remains protected from foreign interventions, rivalries, and divisions that hinder a swift resolution.”

On a bilateral note, Attaf described his meeting with President Saïed as deeply significant, coinciding with the upcoming commemoration of the Sakiet Sidi Youssef events. He noted that this shared history reflects the “highest ideals of brotherhood, solidarity, and sacrifice” between the Algerian and Tunisian peoples.

Attaf conveyed greetings from President Tebboune to President Saïed, reaffirming Algeria’s steadfast commitment to strengthening bilateral ties across Arab, African, Islamic, and Mediterranean spheres. He also expressed shared satisfaction with the “qualitative results” of the 23rd session of the Algerian-Tunisian High Commission held last month.
