Attaf: Algeria Seeks Balanced Partnership with Mediterranean Neighbors and EU

Algerian Foreign Affairs Minister Ahmed Attaf reaffirmed Algeria’s commitment to establishing a “balanced” and “beneficial” partnership with its Mediterranean neighbors, particularly with the European Union.

During a speech at a Ministry of Foreign Affairs event commemorating National Diplomacy Day, themed “Firm Positions in Promoting Peace Values and the Virtues of International Cooperation,” Attaf stated, “Algeria is dedicated to achieving a partnership that is balanced, beneficial, and purposeful with its Mediterranean neighbors, especially the European Union.” He emphasized that this partnership must strictly adhere to the principle of balancing the interests of both parties while prioritizing support for Algeria’s economic development without any restrictions, conditions, or obstacles.

Furthermore, he asserted that the partnership should transcend “the logic of immediate commercial profit” and instead integrate into a broader strategic vision focused on sustainable development in all its dimensions.

On this occasion, Attaf recalled recent comments made by President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, who expressed that “Algeria looks forward to revising the partnership agreement with the European Union in an atmosphere of trust, cooperation, and understanding. The goal is to restore necessary balances in this agreement to align it with Algeria’s new economic reality, thereby making it an effective tool for achieving the desired sustainable development.”

The minister also stated, “In all these areas of belonging and beyond, Algerian diplomacy will continue, under the guidance of the President of the Republic, to strengthen the relationships that connect Algeria with its brothers, friends, and partners, while combining efforts to address the major challenges currently facing the international community.”

Attaf highlighted that “these challenges are of such gravity and seriousness that retreat, isolation, or indifference are not viable options; everyone is affected, involved, and called upon to strive for change towards better outcomes,” noting that “Algeria will be an active participant in these efforts.”
