At Algeria’s Request, UN Security Council Discusses Targeting of UNRWA Workers in Gaza

At Algeria’s request, the UN Security Council convened to discuss the recent Zionist airstrikes on a school in the Nuseirat area of Gaza, which resulted in the deaths of 18 individuals, including women, children, and six staff members from the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA).

This tragic incident brings the total number of casualties among UN agency employees to over 220 since the beginning of the current Zionist aggression against the Palestinian people.

Algeria’s initiative for this meeting comes amidst widespread international condemnation of these attacks. Numerous countries and organizations swiftly denounced the Zionist entity’s deliberate targeting of shelters, which constitutes a war crime under international law, as humanitarian infrastructure and personnel are granted special protection under international humanitarian law.

In response to the growing global denunciation of its actions, the Zionist entity has sought to distort the narrative by accusing Palestinian factions of using civilians as human shields, leading to tragic losses among them. This claim has been repeatedly voiced by the occupier whenever it faces mounting pressure to address ongoing impunity and hold those accountable for these crimes before the appropriate bodies.

The spokesperson for the UN Secretary-General issued a statement condemning the killing of these innocents and called for a thorough and independent investigation to ensure accountability for those responsible. The Secretary-General also reiterated his demand for an immediate ceasefire.
