Armenia’s Former President Serzh Sargsyan Faces New Charges

Armenia’s public television channel has reported that the country’s Prosecutor General’s Office has filed new charges against former President Serzh Sargsyan. As a precautionary measure, he has been placed under a written commitment not to leave the country.
According to the channel, a criminal case has been opened against Sargsyan on allegations of illegally seizing land adjacent to Isakov Street and the Yerablur military site in Yerevan. He has been charged with large-scale embezzlement and money laundering.
Previously, Sargsyan was accused of orchestrating large-scale theft of state funds and granting undue privileges to the company “Flash” during his presidency, allowing it to win a government tender for diesel fuel supply. However, in May last year, a court acquitted him of these charges.
Born in 1954, Serzh Sargsyan served as the President of Armenia from April 9, 2008, to April 9, 2018. He was also the country’s Prime Minister from April 4, 2007, to April 9, 2008, and briefly in April 2018 before stepping down amid widespread protests.
