The African Parliamentary Union (APU) Amendments Review Committee held a meeting in Algiers on Wednesday as part of efforts to update the statutes of the APU and adapt them to the current challenges facing the continent.
APU Secretary General Idi Gado Boubacar said in a statement on the sidelines of the meeting, held at the headquarters of the National People’s Assembly (lower house of parliament), that this reform process began in December 2023 with the aim of revising the texts “to bring them into line with the requirements of our time, strengthen the role of the UPA and support its momentum.”
The proposed amendments, according to him, concern several areas, including those related to the composition of the Union and membership, as well as amendments relating to working methods.
The main objective, he said, is “to ensure that the founding principles of the UPA are put into practice and to defend the causes it champions more effectively.”
