Amnesty International calls on Zionist occupation to release Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya and all detained health workers

Amnesty International called on the Zionist occupation on Monday to release detained health workers, including the director of Kamal Adwan Hospital, Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya, “immediately and unconditionally.”

“For months, Dr. Abu Safiya has been the voice of Gaza’s decimated health sector, appealing for the protection of his hospital and working under inhumane conditions, including after the killing of his son,” Amnesty said. “The raid, the latest in a series of attacks on healthcare facilities in North Gaza over the past two months, left Kamal Adwan— the last remaining major hospital in the area— out of service.”

The organisation emphasised that the Zionist occupation must immediately release all arbitrarily detained Palestinians, especially health workers, noting the need for the international community to act urgently to end the genocide in Gaza.

“Hospitals and health workers are not targets. The international community must act to halt Israel’s attacks in Gaza and ensure justice is served.”

Hussam Abu Safia, 51, was arrested by the occupation forces during their raid on Kamal Adwan Hospital in Beit Lahiya on Friday, and his whereabouts remain unknown.

Abu Safia refused multiple orders by the occupation to leave Kamal Adwan Hospital after the Zionist forces imposed a devastating blockade on the northern Gaza Strip on October 5. During the siege, the Zionist occupation blocked food and water supplies to Palestinians in the area while carrying out airstrikes and shelling, claiming the lives of hundreds of civilians.

The director general of the Ministry of Health in Gaza, Munir al-Barsh, said Abu Safia was severely beaten with batons and sticks by the occupation forces, who forced him to put on clothes meant for prisoners.

This marks the second time in as many months that Abu Safia had been detained by the Zionist forces as they conduct their genocide in Gaza.
