Algiers Wins 2025 ‘Shanghai Award’ for Sustainable Urban Development

Algiers received the Global Award for Sustainable Development in Cities (Shanghai Award) for 2025, in recognition of its efforts toward sustainable urban development, according to a statement from the Wilaya of Algiers. The capital ranks among the five cities worldwide most committed to sustainable development.
The award was presented to Chief of Staff Abderrahmane Rouabhi, representing the Minister-Wali of Algiers, Mohamed Abdenour Rabehi, during a ceremony in Bogotá (Colombia) on the occasion of World Cities Day.
The distinction “recognizes the efforts made by the Wilaya of Algiers in sustainable urban development,” the statement said, noting that these efforts “earned the city a place among those advancing decisively toward a modern, inclusive, and sustainable capital by 2030.”
These initiatives include implementing projects under the strategic vision for the capital’s modernization and development, with concrete achievements in environmental infrastructure, ecological transition, disaster risk management, cultural heritage preservation, boosting tourism appeal, supporting innovation and digital transition, and providing decent housing.
Algiers was selected from 85 cities across 33 countries, alongside Medina (Saudi Arabia), Bogotá (Colombia), Espoo (Finland), and Incheon (South Korea).
