Algiers: Boughali Meets the Danish Ambassador to Algeria

ALGIERS, February 5, 2025 – The President of the Algerian National People’s Assembly (APN), Brahim Boughali, met on Wednesday with the Ambassador of the Kingdom of Denmark to Algeria, Katrine From Hoyer. Their discussions centered on collaboration opportunities and areas of mutual cooperation, as reported by the lower house of Parliament.
At the outset of the meeting, Boughali expressed his satisfaction with the “deep-rooted and historical bilateral relations” between Algeria and Denmark, expressing hope that this year would usher in a period of enhanced coordination and consultation between the two nations to promote global peace and stability.
Additionally, the APN president condemned the recent incident involving the burning of the Quran in Denmark, asserting that Algeria “upholds respect for religions and beliefs while advocating for peace and rejecting extremism.” He also praised the Danish Parliament’s enactment of a law criminalizing the desecration of sacred religious texts.
Boughali reaffirmed his opposition to the European Parliament’s resolution concerning Algeria, urging for “respect for official communication channels, akin to the joint committee between the Algerian Parliament and the European Parliament.”
He also reiterated Algeria’s longstanding position on the Sahrawi issue, calling for adherence to United Nations (UN) resolutions that classify it as a decolonization matter.
In response, From Hoyer highlighted the historical ties between the two countries, affirming her commitment to strengthening and consolidating these relations, particularly within the framework of Algerian investment laws and government incentives designed to encourage Danish entrepreneurs to invest in Algeria, as stated in the report.
Regarding the desecration of the holy Quran, the ambassador assured that this act “does not reflect Denmark’s position,” emphasizing her country’s rejection of “the European Parliament’s resolution concerning Algeria.”
On the topic of parliamentary cooperation, she expressed her desire to “strengthen the bridges of dialogue and collaboration between the parliaments of both countries and to increase visits between representatives of both peoples.” She indicated that preparations are underway for a visit by a delegation from the Danish Parliament’s European Affairs Committee to Algeria, scheduled for next April, aimed at establishing communication channels that reflect the historical relationships between the two nations, the statement concluded.
