Algeria’s Significance to the United Kingdom Highlighted in London

LONDON, February 13, 2025 – The Speaker of the House of Commons, Lindsay Hoyle, underscored Algeria’s importance as a political and economic partner for the United Kingdom, as well as its role in fostering peace and stability in North Africa and the Sahel region.

During a meeting on Tuesday with the Algerian Ambassador to London, Nourredine Yazid, held at Parliament—where the national emblem was displayed for the occasion—Hoyle praised “the quality of bilateral cooperation across various areas of interest.” He emphasized that it is vital for the UK to “leverage Algeria’s abundant natural resources by expanding and deepening partnerships in other sectors, particularly energy and tourism.”

Both the Algerian Ambassador and the Speaker expressed satisfaction with “the excellence of Algerian-British relations, which have always been characterized by respect and friendship, and are now experiencing increased dynamism and flourishing.”

This meeting followed the reconfiguration of the British Parliament after the general elections held on July 4, 2024. It provided Nourredine Yazid with an opportunity to discuss “the prospects for cooperation between the two parliaments and the necessary mechanisms to further enhance this collaboration,” as well as to exchange views on various pressing regional and international issues.

In this context, the Algerian Ambassador reassured his host, who aims to strengthen multifaceted ties, that the political and economic reforms underway in Algeria under President Abdelmadjid Tebboune would “enable both countries to capitalize on their untapped common potential, despite the progress made in recent years concerning trade volume.”

The importance of establishing a robust and fruitful exchange between the chambers of both countries was also highlighted regarding inter-parliamentary cooperation.

Nourredine Yazid acknowledged the “positive” role of the Westminster Foundation for Democracy, which has initiated collaborations with both chambers of the Algerian Parliament.

Furthermore, the meeting allowed the Ambassador to express a desire to expedite the formation of the Algeria-UK Parliamentary Friendship Group arising from the new legislature.

In this regard, Mr. Hoyle conveyed his willingness to maintain communication with the Algerian diplomatic representation and expressed hope for an exchange of visits between parliamentarians from both nations.
