Algeria’s Secretary of State for African Affairs Holds Key Meetings at UNSC

NEW YORK (UN), February 19, 2025 – Algerian Secretary of State to the Minister of Foreign Affairs, in charge of African Affairs, Bakhta Selma Mansouri, held a series of bilateral meetings on Tuesday while participating in a high-level public debate at the UN Security Council that focused on multilateralism and global governance reform. Throughout this event, she interacted with various heads of delegations attending the meeting, as well as several UN officials.

Among her discussions, Mansouri met with Ahmed Maalim Faqi, Somalia’s Foreign Minister; Jeje Odongo Abubakher, Uganda’s Foreign Minister; and Francess Piagie Alghali, Deputy Foreign Minister of Sierra Leone.

These conversations provided a platform for exchanging views on regional and international issues, emphasizing strategies to enhance coordination and cooperation within international forums, particularly within the African Union (AU) and the United Nations (UN).

Additionally, a meeting took place with representatives from the “A3+” group (comprising Algeria, Somalia, Sierra Leone, and Guyana). This meeting focused on discussing items on the Security Council’s agenda, especially those pertaining to countries in Africa and Latin America. Participants explored methods to strengthen consultation and coordination within the group to amplify its influence in the Security Council.

The Secretary of State also engaged in discussions with Cristina Duarte, the UN Special Advisor for Africa, and Martha Ama Akyaa Pobee, the Assistant Secretary-General of the United Nations for Africa. They talked about prospects for enhancing the partnership between Algeria and the UN in peacekeeping and peacebuilding efforts, particularly in Africa, as well as improving cooperation and coordination between Africa and the UN concerning peace, security, and development on the continent.
