UN Security Council Adopts Algeria’s Initiative to Ensure Equal Access to Council Documents

In a landmark achievement for Algerian diplomacy, Algeria’s initiative to eliminate unequal access to Security Council documents has been officially recognized. After more than six months of intense consultations, Algeria succeeded in securing a revision of the UN Security Council’s working methods, ensuring that all members, including elected ones, now have equal access to council documents. This shift addresses a longstanding discrepancy where only permanent members were allowed full access to internal documents.

Algeria, upon discovering this disparity, initiated a well-coordinated diplomatic campaign. Starting with consultations among members of the A3+ group, Algeria expanded its efforts to include all elected members.

Despite resistance from some permanent members who considered certain documents to be exclusive to them, Algeria’s persistence, backed by legal and procedural maneuvers, eventually led to the adoption of the revised Presidential Note 507, which now includes clear provisions for equal access to relevant documents.

This victory not only strengthens Algeria’s position within the Council but also reinforces its commitment to transparency and fairness in international diplomacy. The adoption of this reform marks a significant step toward a more inclusive and equitable UN Security Council, reflecting Algeria’s influential role in shaping global governance.
