Algeria’s FM Attaf Meets UN Envoy on Western Sahara in New York

Algeria’s Minister of State, Minister of Foreign Affairs, National Community Abroad, and African Affairs, Ahmed Attaf, held talks Thursday in New York with UN Secretary-General’s personal envoy for Western Sahara, Staffan de Mistura, on the sidelines of the high-level segment of the UN General Assembly, the foreign ministry said.
The meeting followed discussions between the two sides on September 16 in Algiers and focused on developments in the Western Sahara issue ahead of a Security Council meeting on the matter scheduled for October, the statement added.
Attaf reiterated Algeria’s “firm position in support of UN efforts to reach a just, lasting and definitive settlement of the Western Sahara question, one that guarantees the Sahrawi people the exercise of their inalienable right to self-determination,” according to the ministry.
