Algeria’s Diplomatic Triumphs: Making Waves on the World Stage

Positioning Algeria among key players on both regional and international levels has been a challenging endeavor amidst rapid changes and escalating conflicts. Nevertheless, Algerian diplomacy has engaged in “battles of the giants,” shining even during the most difficult periods.

In recent years, Algerian diplomacy has orchestrated significant moves regionally and internationally. It has established Algeria’s reputation far from the politics of evasion and absenteeism, consistently maintaining its presence at international forums while adhering to its core principles: non-interference in the internal affairs of other countries and advocating for just causes. This steadfast approach comes at a time when other countries have succumbed to diplomatic pressure and blackmail or become victims of major powers’ conflicts amidst current polarization and power rebalancing.

The activities of Algerian diplomacy extend beyond high-level exchanges between its President and leaders of neighboring Arab and African nations, as well as major powers such as Russia, China, Italy, and France. Notably, Algeria hosted the Arab Summit in November 2022 under the theme “Summit of Gathering,” aiming for a unified, strong, and stable Arab world. This summit significantly elevated the Palestinian issue from merely being “a file on the rulers’ table” to a forefront priority. The culmination of these efforts was the “Algeria Declaration,” which reconciled Palestinian factions after 15 years of discord. Furthermore, since its election as a non-permanent member for the 2024-2025 term, Algeria has actively engaged the UN Security Council in defense of this uncompromisingly just cause. Among its priorities are amplifying Africa’s voice in the Security Council, promoting peaceful resolutions to crises, strengthening partnerships, supporting regional organizations, enhancing the roles of women and youth in peace processes, and bolstering international counter-terrorism efforts.

Another landmark event for Algerian diplomacy was the Gas Summit in March 2024, which asserted Algeria as a crucial player in the gas industry. This summit fostered a Maghrebi tripartite alliance between Algeria, Tunisia, and Libya to coordinate cooperation frameworks that had dwindled due to the stagnation—or virtual demise—of the Arab Maghreb Union.

Algerian diplomacy has consistently strived to secure a distinguished position for Algeria within the international community. It has actively engaged on Arab, African, and global fronts, steadfastly adhering to its principles in a challenging arena where victory is not easily attained by those who resist compliance and normalization. In defending its positions, interests, and just causes, Algeria’s stance has frequently been validated by the outcomes of crises in neighboring regions, establishing the country as an influential actor whose opinion is both sought after and highly regarded.
