The President of the Commission for Foreign Affairs, International Cooperation, and the National Community Abroad at the Algerian Council of the Nation, Mohamed Amroun, met on Thursday with Leonid Slutsky, his counterpart from the State Duma of the Russian Federation, as announced in a press release from the upper house of Parliament.
This meeting, held “at the instruction of the President of the Council of the Nation, Mr. Salah Goudjil,” provided an opportunity for both parties to exchange “views on numerous international and regional issues of mutual interest,” the statement noted.
It also highlighted the “strong ties of friendship, mutual respect, and fruitful cooperation uniting Algeria and Russia, based on shared principles and interests under the guidance of the two leaders, Messrs. Abdelmadjid Tebboune and Vladimir Putin.”
In this context, Amroun praised “the historic Algerian-Russian relations and the declaration of a deep strategic partnership that governs their cooperation across various fields,” emphasizing “the political will to enhance exchanges and elevate cooperation to new heights as part of our country’s economic revival.”
He reviewed “the achievements realized by Algeria through extensive reforms that have led to legislative measures promoting investment, wealth creation, and the establishment of bilateral relations grounded in mutual benefits.”
On this occasion, Amroun reiterated Algeria’s positions on various international, Arab, and African issues, while commending the Russian-African partnership aimed at “strengthening the economic capacities of African nations.”
For his part, Leonid Slutsky expressed satisfaction with the quality of historical relations between the two countries and the pace of coordination and cooperation characterizing them, within the framework of “the deeply strategic partnership declaration signed by the leaders of both countries.” He affirmed that his country “is committed to implementing it, recognizing Algeria’s importance as a privileged partner.”
The Russian official further emphasized “the positive coordination that marks their joint diplomatic actions in UN and international organizations,” praising “the effectiveness of Algeria’s diplomatic efforts within the United Nations Security Council.”
He expressed optimism about a promising future for cooperation, which would further strengthen ties and partnerships between Russia and Algeria to safeguard the interests of both parties in a rapidly changing world.
As the head of the Liberal Democratic Party parliamentary group (the second largest political bloc in the Duma), Slutsky stated that “all political components in Russia are interested in developing and strengthening relations with Algeria to elevate them to higher levels,” according to the statement.
Additionally, the two parties discussed the humanitarian tragedy in Gaza and the occupied Palestinian territories, as well as the situation in the Sahel region, agreeing to “continue coordination to enable colonized peoples to exercise their right to self-determination and independence, while encouraging African solutions to African problems.”
Both sides also called for “intensifying parliamentary cooperation between the Algerian Parliament and the Federal Assembly of Russia through exchange visits and shared experiences, and activating the two friendship groups established by the two institutions to promote their parliamentary relations and bolster dialogue between the representatives of the two friendly peoples,” concluded the statement.
