Algerian President’s Message on International Solidarity Day with Palestinians

On Wednesday, the Algerian President, Abdelmadjid Tebboune, delivered a message ahead of the celebration of International Solidarity Day with the Palestinian People, observed on November 29. The message was read on his behalf by Minister of Mujahideen and Rights Holders, Laïd Rebiga, during a ceremony held in Algiers. Below is the translation:

“The observance of International Solidarity Day with the Palestinian people this year comes at an especially difficult time, marked by the brutal aggression of the Israeli occupation against the defenseless Palestinian population, particularly in the Gaza Strip. This aggression has now persisted for over a year, exposing the shameful failure of the international community to halt its horrific repercussions, as the Israeli occupier disregards all charters and rules.

Despite the immense suffering and overwhelming challenges they face, the Palestinian people, like other oppressed groups seeking freedom, are forging their own miracle. Refusing to accept the status quo, they assert their rights from within prisons, mountains, rubble, and the depths of the earth, continuing to resist the blockade, famine, bombardments, and abuses with resilience and dignity, bolstered by their unwavering belief in the righteousness of their cause and the legitimacy of their demands.

In light of these significant sacrifices, we can only bow in respect and admiration before this courageous people who deserve a resolute uprising from the entire international community to free them from the genocidal plans currently being executed by the occupier in Gaza with utmost brutality.

As advocates of just peace, it is our responsibility to unite our efforts, consolidate our forces, and demonstrate greater determination than ever to empower the Palestinian people to achieve the long-awaited reality fully guaranteed by laws and international legality—an inalienable and imprescriptible right, as affirmed by the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in its advisory opinion issued on July 19, 2024, and endorsed by the United Nations General Assembly in its resolution ES-10/24.

The cost of silence and inaction in response to the unfolding Palestinian tragedy is exorbitant, and it will only escalate in the future. The international community’s failure to impose decisions based on international legality upon the Israeli occupier not only jeopardizes the foundational principles of an international order established by wise founders and upheld by successive generations, but also fosters the emergence of an anarchic order entirely governed by the logic of force, eradicating all forms of justice and law.

In this grim and perilous context, Algeria reaffirms its unwavering support for the Palestinian people in their legitimate struggle to secure their right to self-determination and to establish their independent and sovereign state along the borders of June 4, 1967, with East Jerusalem as its capital, in accordance with the decisions of international legality.

My country also insists on the necessity of holding the occupier accountable for the genocide, war crimes, and crimes against humanity that it continues to perpetrate against the Palestinian people. Furthermore, Algeria reiterates its rejection and strong condemnation of any desperate attempts to liquidate the Palestinian cause through forced displacement and the alteration of the historical and legal status of the city of Jerusalem, which holds profound significance for both Muslim and Christian communities.”

As a member of the Security Council, Algeria will continue to strongly advocate for its position in full alignment with its enduring principles and commitments to the United Nations Charter. While the world calls unanimously for a two-state solution, there is no alternative but to admit Palestine as a full-fledged member state of the United Nations and to decisively counter those extremists who deny Palestinians their fundamental national rights.

It is essential to recognize the growing trend toward international recognition of the State of Palestine and to encourage nations that have not yet done so to join this movement and participate in efforts aimed at establishing a just peace.

The stability and security of the Middle East are intricately linked to resolving the Palestinian issue, which necessitates ending the occupation—the root cause of suffering and violence—and enabling the Palestinian people to reclaim their inalienable rights.

Let us use this Day of Solidarity as an opportunity to reaffirm our commitment and determination to achieve a legal and just resolution to this cause. Through our united support, we can help the Palestinian people thrive on the very land that the occupier seeks to destroy.
