Algerian President: Study to Launch New Seawater Desalination Plants Soon

ALGIERS – Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune announced that a study will soon be conducted to build new seawater desalination plants in several wilayas (provinces) across the country, in order to achieve water security for the nation.
During his periodic meeting with the media, which was broadcast on national television and radio channels on Friday evening, the President highlighted the critical importance of securing the country’s water supply, particularly given the low rainfall. He stressed the need to take necessary measures to ensure the availability of drinking water, noting that this issue has already been “addressed in some wilayas with the construction of five desalination plants.”
In this context, the Algerian President stated that “a study will be conducted to establish five or six additional plants, with the specific wilayas to be identified in an upcoming cabinet meeting.”
“No Algerian citizen will be left to suffer from thirst, even if it requires resorting to exceptional measures while awaiting permanent solutions,” the President said, adding that efforts will also be made to “ensure the provision of water for at least a respectable duration of 10 to 11 hours per day.”
