Algerian Interior Minister, Italian Counterpart Discuss Strengthening of Cooperation

ALGIERS – The strengthening of the decentralized dynamic of cooperation between Algeria and Italy in terms of local was one of the main points raised by Minister of the Interior, Local Collectivites and National Planning, Brahim Merad, and his Italian counterpart, Matteo Piantedosi, said the ministry on Wednesday in a Communiqué.
Accompanied by the Director General of National Security (DGSN), the Algerian Ambassador to Italy, and the Algerian Consul General in Naples, Merad visited the coastal town of Cetara, which is “intrinsically linked to Algeria, particularly with Ghazaouet, Oran, and Algiers, due to the commercial exchanges and fishing activities they experienced during the 19th century.”
The minister was welcomed by the Governor of Salerno, the Mayor of Cetara, as well as local authorities and citizens of the town, during “a solemn ceremony filled with sentiments of friendship and recognition for Algeria.”
During this ceremony, “the keys to the city were handed over to the minister, to be presented to President of the Republic, Abdelmadjid Tebboune, as a token of friendship offered by the citizens and an expression of the values of good neighborliness,” the source added.
It was also “agreed to revitalize joint action through a decentralized cooperation agreement between the cities of Ghazaouet and Cetara, focusing on strengthening joint economic activities and exchanging expertise and knowledge in the fields of fishing, manufacturing, agri-food industries, and shipbuilding, while involving local operators, particularly young people,” according to the same source.
The Algerian delegation “visited local factories specializing in the processing and marketing of seafood products and learned about the traditional techniques used by local operators,” the source concluded.
