Algerian FM to Chair UNSC Meeting on Arab League and UN Cooperation

Ahmed Attaf, Algerian Minister of State and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Community Abroad, and African Affairs, will chair a meeting of the UN Security Council on Thursday in New York focused on enhancing cooperation between the UN and the Arab League.

The meeting will feature contributions from prominent speakers, including Mohamed Khaled Khiari, Under-Secretary-General for the Middle East, and Ahmed Aboul Gheit, Secretary-General of the Arab League.

Algeria has circulated a concept note outlining the meeting’s objectives. The primary focus will be to assess the current state of collaboration between the UN and the Arab League in addressing ongoing regional crises. Participants will identify practical methods to leverage the expertise of both organizations in conflict prevention and resolution while contemplating immediate and long-term strategies to effectively address current regional challenges.

Additionally, the concept note discusses the development of joint approaches to humanitarian assistance and civilian protection, as well as mechanisms to address the regional repercussions of conflicts.

It raises critical questions to guide discussions on how the Security Council and the Arab League can better synchronize their efforts in responding to multiple crises affecting the Arab region. The note also prompts consideration of concrete actions both parties can take to enhance their joint capacity for conflict prevention and resolution in light of emerging regional challenges.

Furthermore, it explores potential avenues for the Security Council and the Arab League to establish more effective mechanisms for implementing Council resolutions.

As a reminder, Attaf held talks with the Secretary-General of the Arab League on Wednesday in New York during high-level meetings related to Algeria’s presidency of the UN Security Council. This engagement is part of the preparations for Thursday’s session chaired by the Minister, focusing on cooperation between the Arab League and the United Nations.
