Algerian FM Meets with NATO’s Deputy Assistant SG for Political Affairs and Security Policy

ALGIERS, January 29, 2025 – Ahmed Attaf, Algerian Minister of State and Minister of Foreign Affairs, National Community Abroad, and African Affairs, met on Wednesday at the ministry’s headquarters with Javier Colomina, NATO’s Deputy Assistant Secretary General for Political Affairs and Security Policy, who is currently on an official visit to Algeria, as stated in a ministry announcement.
This meeting served as an opportunity to assess the current status and future prospects of dialogue and cooperation between Algeria and NATO, as well as to exchange views and analyses on various mutual interests, particularly security challenges in the Euro-Mediterranean region, along with developments in the Middle East and the Sahel-Saharan area, according to the statement.
The second session of the political dialogue between Algeria and NATO was held during this visit, as noted by the same source.
In a press statement following his meeting with Attaf, Colomina underscored that “Algeria is a key player in matters of security and stability, especially in the fight against terrorism.” He elaborated that their discussions encompassed “the security challenges we are facing and regional issues, particularly in the Sahel region, which is of significant concern to us.” He remarked, “It is often said that this might be the most unstable region in the world today,” adding that “this poses a critical and priority security issue for the organization I represent and for most of our allies.”
Regarding the political dialogue between NATO and Algeria, Colomina noted: “It is progressing well, and we have chosen to deepen it,” highlighting that “practical cooperation and collaboration between our military forces have advanced significantly over the past two decades.”
“We also discussed ways to enhance joint activities,” he continued, characterizing the discussions as “positive.”
