Algerian FM Holds Wide-Ranging Bilateral Talks at UN General Assembly

Continuing his bilateral engagements on the sidelines of the high-level segment of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, Algerian Foreign Minister Ahmed Attaf held talks with foreign ministers from several friendly countries across five continents.

Attaf met with Uganda’s Foreign Minister Jeje Odongo Abubakhar, Eritrea’s Foreign Minister Osman Saleh Mohammed, Burundi’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Regional Integration and Development Cooperation Ezéchiel Nibigira, India’s External Affairs Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, Venezuela’s Foreign Minister Yván Gil Pinto, Belarus’ Foreign Minister Maksim Ryzhenkov, Brunei Darussalam’s Foreign Minister Dato Erywan Yusof, and Maldives’ Foreign Minister Abdulla Shahid.

The meeting with Jeje Odongo Abubakhar focused on the positive results in strengthening bilateral economic ties, as well as preparations for the joint governmental committee. With Osman Saleh Mohammed, discussions centered on regional developments and prospects for stronger bilateral cooperation. Talks with Ezéchiel Nibigira highlighted ways to consolidate cooperation and coordination in international fora. With Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, Attaf reviewed the positive momentum in relations following the Indian President’s state visit to Algeria, and discussed preparations for the joint committee session.

In his meeting with Yván Gil Pinto, both sides reaffirmed their historic friendship and cooperation, agreeing to continue coordination in support of just causes worldwide. Discussions with Maksim Ryzhenkov emphasized the momentum created by the joint economic cooperation committee held last April and the potential to elevate ties further. With Dato Erywan Yusof, Attaf explored ways to strengthen the institutional and legal framework of relations and enhance Algeria–ASEAN cooperation after Algeria’s accession to the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation. Finally, with Abdulla Shahid, he discussed prospects for boosting economic cooperation and continuing mutual support and coordination in international organizations.
