Algerian FM Holds Talks with Swiss Counterpart in Bern

The Algerian Minister of State, Minister of Foreign Affairs, National Community Abroad and African Affairs, Ahmed Attaf, held talks on Thursday in Bern with Federal Councilor Ignazio Cassis, Vice President of the Swiss Confederation and Head of the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (FDFA), according to a statement from the ministry. The meeting provided an opportunity for a comprehensive and in-depth assessment of the various dimensions of Algeria-Switzerland relations.

Both sides explored ways to elevate bilateral ties by strengthening political dialogue, consolidating economic partnerships, and enhancing the human dimension of cooperation, according to the statement.

The two officials agreed to establish an institutional mechanism dedicated to developing bilateral cooperation and strengthening the legal framework governing their relations, in line with priorities to be jointly defined.

The ministers also discussed a range of international and regional issues of mutual interest, including current developments in the Middle East and the evolving situation in the Sahel region.

On the sidelines of the talks, Attaf and his Swiss counterpart attended a presentation on the historical ties between Algeria and Switzerland, notably the role of Swiss friends in supporting the Algerian people during the National Liberation Revolution and their prominent contribution to facilitating the Evian Accords, which led to Algeria’s independence.

Both ministers emphasized the importance of honoring this shared historical legacy and building upon it to sustain the traditions of support, solidarity and friendship between the two countries.
