Algerian FM Engages with Various Counterparts in New York

Ahmed Attaf, the Algerian Minister of Foreign Affairs and National Community Abroad, conducted bilateral discussions in New York with several counterparts from various nations. These meetings were part of his ongoing engagements on the sidelines of the general debate at the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), as reported by the ministry on Wednesday.
During these discussions, Attaf met with Saudi Arabia’s Foreign Minister, Prince Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud; Somalia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Ahmed Moalim Fiqi; Nicaragua’s Minister of International Relations, Valdrack Ludwing Jaentschke Whitaker; Slovakia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and European Affairs, Juraj Blanar; and Estonia’s Foreign Minister, Margus Tsahkna, according to the statement.
The meeting between Attaf and his Saudi counterpart centered on reviewing developments in the Middle East amid the ongoing Zionist aggression in the occupied Palestinian territories and its spillover into Lebanon, against the backdrop of escalating actions by the occupying power, as clarified in the statement.
Both parties also explored ways to mobilize and coordinate efforts among organizations to which both countries belong, particularly the Arab League and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC). Their goal was to urge the international community to provide greater support for the Palestinian cause and to exert increased pressure on the Zionist occupiers, the communiqué added.
Attaf discussed strengthening bilateral relations with his Somali counterpart and emphasized the importance of enhanced consultation and coordination in light of Somalia’s upcoming non-permanent seat on the UN Security Council, alongside Algeria, starting January 1, 2025, as noted in the report.
In his conversation with the Nicaraguan Foreign Minister, Attaf acknowledged the positive momentum in bilateral relations, highlighted by the recent establishment of embassies in Managua and Algiers, following the presidents’ decision to elevate diplomatic representation.
With Slovakia’s Foreign Minister, Attaf welcomed the nation’s plan to open an embassy in Algeria in the coming months. Consequently, both parties agreed to take concrete steps to revitalize their bilateral relations in accordance with their shared historical legacy, particularly through activating mechanisms for cooperation and enhancing mutual coordination and support in international forums.
Additionally, the Foreign Minister discussed opportunities for strengthening bilateral cooperation with his Estonian counterpart and exchanged views on various international and regional issues of mutual interest, particularly developments in the Middle East, the statement concluded.
