Algerian FM Engages in Talks with Mauritanian President’s Special Envoy

Algiers, February 6, 2025 – On Thursday, Algerian Minister of State, Minister of Foreign Affairs, National Community Abroad and African Affairs Ahmed Attaf, met with Mohamed Salem Ould Merzouk, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Cooperation, and Mauritanians Abroad of the Republic of Mauritania. Ould Merzouk is on an official visit to Algeria as a special envoy of President Mohamed Ould Cheikh El-Ghazouani, according to a statement from the ministry.

The discussions provided an opportunity to explore ways to sustain the growing momentum and positive dynamics that characterize the cooperative and integrative relations between Algeria and Mauritania, in alignment with the directives of both nations’ leaders—President Abdelmadjid Tebboune and his counterpart, President Mohamed Ould Cheikh El-Ghazouani.

Additionally, the two ministers reviewed key issues and topics of mutual interest on both Arab and African fronts, particularly the latest developments concerning the Palestinian cause and matters on the agenda of the African Union. This comes as the Islamic Republic of Mauritania prepares to transfer the presidency of the continental organization to the Republic of Angola during the summit scheduled for mid-February in Addis Ababa, the source added.
