Algerian Army Takes Extensive Actions to Combat Terrorism, Organized Crime

The Algerian Ministry of National Defense has released a comprehensive operational report detailing significant military actions between December 18 and December 24, underscoring the military’s ongoing commitment to safeguarding national security and addressing various forms of terrorism and organized crime.

Counterterrorism Success

A notable achievement in counterterrorism operations was the voluntary surrender of the notorious terrorist “Rekadi Sid Ahmed,” also known as “Abu Al-Baraa.” He surrendered to Algerian military forces in Bordj Badji Mokhtar and was found in possession of a Kalashnikov rifle, mortar shells, ammunition, and other materials. Additionally, eight individuals providing logistical support to terrorist groups were arrested, further weakening extremist networks.

Crackdown on Organized Crime and Smuggling

The Algerian military’s operations targeting organized crime resulted in the arrest of 33 drug traffickers. The forces intercepted 234 kilograms of processed cannabis smuggled from Morocco, alongside the seizure of illegal firearms and a massive haul of 2,460,875 narcotic pills. Additionally, efforts to combat illegal mining in southern Algeria led to the detention of 457 individuals involved in illicit mining activities, along with the confiscation of vehicles, generators, explosives, and significant quantities of gold.

Dismantling Smuggling Rings and Securing Borders

The report also highlighted successful efforts to disrupt various smuggling and trafficking rings. Military units seized hunting rifles, automatic pistols, large quantities of fuel, tobacco, and food products intended for illegal trade. These operations demonstrate the military’s ongoing commitment to protecting Algeria’s borders and neutralizing criminal networks. In response to growing migration challenges, Algeria’s Coast Guard also thwarted several illegal migration attempts, rescuing seven individuals attempting to cross the Mediterranean and apprehending 44 other migrants trying to enter Algeria illegally.

The report underscores the Algerian Army’s effectiveness and vigilance in maintaining national security. Through a combination of counterterrorism efforts, smuggling interdiction, and border protection, the military continues to play a critical role in ensuring the nation’s stability and security.
