Algerian Army Foils Smuggling of Over Seven Quintals of Cannabis from Morocco

Attempts to smuggle more than seven quintals of processed cannabis from the Moroccan borders were foiled during operations carried out by combined detachments of the National People’s Army (ANP), in coordination with various security services, between September 17 and 23, according to an operational report released Wednesday by the ANP.

“In the framework of sustained efforts in the fight against terrorism and organized crime in its various forms, ANP units and detachments conducted several operations during the period of September 17–23, 2025, achieving significant results that reflect the high professionalism, vigilance, and constant readiness of our Armed Forces across the national territory,” the statement said. In their fight against organized crime and drug trafficking, combined ANP detachments, in coordination with security services, intercepted 50 drug traffickers and foiled attempts to introduce 7 quintals and 54 kilograms of processed cannabis from Morocco. They also seized 370,176 psychotropic tablets.

In Tamanrasset, Bordj Badji Mokhtar, In Salah, In Guezzam, and Djanet, ANP detachments arrested 627 individuals and seized 19 vehicles, 254 generators, 227 jackhammers, 4 metal detectors, as well as quantities of raw gold, stones, and equipment used in illegal gold panning. Additionally, 10 other individuals were apprehended, and authorities seized one Kalashnikov submachine gun, 9 hunting rifles, 51,630 liters of fuel, 357 quintals of tobacco, and 30.5 tons of foodstuffs intended for smuggling and speculation during separate operations.

Meanwhile, Coast Guards thwarted attempts at illegal migration along national coasts, rescuing 251 people aboard makeshift boats. Across the national territory, 832 illegal immigrants of various nationalities were also arrested, the ANP report concluded.
