Algerian Army Foils Smuggling of Over 4 Quintals of Cannabis From Morocco in One Week

Attempts to smuggle over four quintals of cannabis resin across the borders with Morocco were thwarted, while more than 42 kilograms of cocaine were seized in operations conducted by combined detachments of the People’s National Army (PNA) over the past week, according to a PNA operational report released Thursday.

“In line with sustained efforts to combat terrorism and multifaceted organized crime, PNA units conducted several operations between April 1 and 7, 2026, achieving high-quality results that reflect the professionalism, vigilance, and constant readiness of our Armed Forces,” the statement said.

As part of counterterrorism efforts, PNA detachments arrested six individuals for providing support to terrorist groups.

In the crackdown on organized crime and drug trafficking, combined detachments, in coordination with various security services, apprehended 36 traffickers. They foiled attempts to smuggle 432 kilograms of cannabis resin across the Moroccan border and seized 42.36 kilograms of cocaine along with 1,039,195 psychotropic tablets across various Military Regions.

In Tamanrasset, Bordj Badji Mokhtar, In Salah, Illizi, and In Guezzam, PNA detachments arrested 422 individuals. Seized items included 40 vehicles, 298 generators, 229 jackhammers, and quantities of raw gold and gold-bearing ore, along with equipment used in illegal mining.

Additionally, 18 other individuals were apprehended in separate operations, during which security forces seized a submachine gun, two automatic pistols, a hunting rifle, 20,115 liters of fuel, 70 quintals of tobacco, and 8 tons of foodstuffs intended for smuggling.

The Coast Guard also foiled several irregular migration attempts, rescuing 121 individuals aboard makeshift boats. Across the national territory, 749 irregular migrants of various nationalities were intercepted, the report concluded.
