Algerian Army Foils Smuggling of 700 kg of Cannabis from Morocco

ALGIERS, Oct 29, 2025 – The Algerian National People’s Army (ANP) thwarted attempts to smuggle more than seven quintals (over 700 kilograms) of processed cannabis through the country’s western borders with Morocco during the past week, the army said Wednesday in a weekly operational report.

The operations, carried out between October 22 and 28, were conducted by combined ANP detachments in coordination with security services, as part of ongoing efforts to combat terrorism and organized crime, the statement said.

In counterterrorism operations, ANP units arrested seven individuals supporting terrorist groups in various regions of the country.

Meanwhile, in the fight against organized crime, 51 drug traffickers were apprehended and 7 quintals and 21 kilograms of processed cannabis were seized, along with 155,978 psychotropic tablets, according to the report.

In southern regions including Tamanrasset, Bordj Badji Mokhtar, In Salah, In Guezzam, and Illizi, the army also arrested 204 individuals and confiscated 52 vehicles, 208 generators, 144 jackhammers, and equipment used in illegal gold mining.

Additionally, 12 more individuals were detained, and authorities seized five Kalashnikov submachine guns, one sniper rifle, ten hunting rifles, nearly 48,000 liters of fuel, as well as 14 quintals of tobacco and 44 tons of foodstuffs destined for smuggling and speculation.

Coast Guard units also foiled illegal migration attempts, rescuing 175 people aboard makeshift boats, while 478 undocumented migrants of various nationalities were arrested across the country, the ANP added.
