Algeria, Tunisia Discuss Boosting Energy, Mining Cooperation

Algeria and Tunisia held talks Wednesday in Algiers to explore ways of strengthening bilateral cooperation in energy, hydrocarbons, mining and renewable energy, with a particular focus on electricity interconnection projects and the exploitation and processing of phosphate products, the Ministry of Hydrocarbons and Mines and the Ministry of Energy and Renewable Energy said in a joint statement.

The discussions took place at the Ministry of Hydrocarbons and Mines, where Minister of State Mohamed Arkab and Minister of Energy and Renewable Energy Mourad Adjal received Imad Derbali, President of Tunisia’s National Council of Regions and Districts, who is on an official visit to Algeria heading a parliamentary delegation.

The meeting was held in the presence of the Secretary of State to the Minister of State, Minister of Hydrocarbons and Mines, in charge of Mines, Karima Bakir Tafer, Vice Speaker of the Council of the Nation for Foreign Affairs, Rabah Baghali, and senior officials from both ministries.

It was devoted to reviewing the current state and future prospects of bilateral cooperation across the energy, hydrocarbons, mining and renewable energy sectors.

Talks covered what both sides described as long-standing ties between the two countries, and focused on ways to consolidate and develop cooperation in hydrocarbon production and marketing, electricity generation and transmission, new and renewable energies, and the broader energy transition.

The two sides also reviewed progress on joint projects, notably the Algeria-Tunisia electricity interconnection reinforcement project, as well as cooperation prospects in the mining sector, particularly the exploitation and processing of phosphate products, and opportunities for expertise exchange and training.

Both ministers presented overviews of their respective sectors’ development programs and reaffirmed their readiness to strengthen cooperation between national institutions, in line with the will of the two countries’ leaders to build an effective and sustainable economic partnership.
