Algeria to Establish Children’s Parliament on Monday

The Algerian Children’s Parliament will be officially established for the first time next Monday at the People’s National Assembly (Lower House of Parliament), the Lower House said on Tuesday in a statement.

The same source said that the session establishing the Algerian Children’s Parliament “will mark a vital political moment, as Algeria will see its first-ever election of a Children’s Parliament speaker through secret, individual ballot since independence.” The session will also feature “elections for all other positions and bodies within the Algerian Children’s Parliament, including vice speakers, committee chairs and bureau members.” According to the statement, “candidates for Children’s Parliament speaker will be elected from among the members themselves, while the preparatory committee will provide members with a special illustrated handbook outlining the eligibility requirements and election procedures for all parliamentary positions and bodies.”

The statement further noted the candidacy requirements for the speaker’s position, noting that “members may only run for one position, and the Children’s Parliament speaker serves for the full two-year parliamentary term.”
