Algeria Summons French Chargé d’Affaires Over Detention of Consular Official

Algeria has summoned the French chargé d’affaires in Algiers, issuing a firm protest over the renewal, for an additional year, of the pretrial detention of an Algerian consular official.

According to a communiqué from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Algerian side strongly objected to the decision, noting that the official has already been held in pretrial detention since April 2025, despite benefiting from protections under the Vienna Convention on Consular Relations.

The statement also expressed strong condemnation of the treatment endured by the consular official since his incarceration, as revealed during the first authorized consular visit on March 17.

Finally, the French diplomat was informed that this decision, considered unjustifiable, will inevitably have consequences on the normal course of Algerian-French relations.
