Algeria Submits ‘Blousa’ And Other Heritage Elements to UNESCO

The Algerian Minister of Culture and Arts, Malika Bendouda, presided on Tuesday over the official ceremony for submitting nomination files of several elements of Algeria’s rich intangible cultural heritage for inscription on UNESCO World Heritage lists, foremost among them the “Blousa,” according to a ministry statement released Wednesday.

During the ceremony, held at the headquarters of the National Center for Anthropological, Prehistoric, and Historical Research (CNRPAH) in Algiers, the official submission of several Algerian heritage elements was carried out, led by the “Blousa” file titled: “The art of the Blousa and its ornamentation in western Algeria.”

The “Blousa” nomination is presented as “a celebration of an aesthetic heritage combining memory and the creativity of women from western Algeria,” highlighting exceptional craftsmanship and deep-rooted social traditions that have made it a symbol of Algerian elegance and enduring cultural identity.

As part of a “comprehensive national strategy to safeguard Algeria’s intangible heritage and strengthen its international presence,” the ministry also submitted other files reflecting the richness and diversity of Algerian culture, including Meddahates songs, described as preserving spiritual expression and praise traditions passed down through generations.

In addition, a joint file led by Algeria with 13 Arab countries was submitted under the title: “Traditional board thinking games (Al-Kharbga/Al-Sidja, Al-Dama, and Al-Mancala): skills and social practices,” highlighting shared cultural values.

Algeria also contributed to other joint Arab files related to traditional pottery and irrigation systems.

“This cultural achievement reflects the State’s commitment to preserving national identity and promoting our heritage internationally, ensuring it remains a source of pride for future generations and a legacy protected by history and global recognition,” the statement concluded.
