Algeria Snatch Dramatic Late Winner to Reach AFCON Quarter-Finals

Algeria booked their place in the quarter-finals of the Africa Cup of Nations after a hard-fought 1–0 victory over the Democratic Republic of the Congo, decided in extra time, in a match marked by intensity, tactical discipline and late drama.
Both teams approached the encounter with caution, resulting in a physical battle and strong defensive organization throughout the first half, with few clear scoring opportunities.
A controversial moment occurred in the 12th minute when forward Mohamed Amoura went down inside the penalty area, but the referee waved play on.
Algeria attempted to threaten through set pieces and long-range efforts, while the Democratic Republic of the Congo relied on swift counter-attacks, the most dangerous of which came from Cédric Bakambu, whose effort was brilliantly saved by goalkeeper Luka Zidane.
In the second half, the “Greens” showed greater attacking intent. Head coach Vladimir Petković made several substitutions in search of a breakthrough, but poor finishing and outstanding goalkeeping at both ends kept the score level, forcing the match into extra time.
Algeria maintained sustained pressure during the additional periods, and their persistence was finally rewarded when substitute Adel Boulbina struck a powerful late goal, sealing a valuable win and a deserved qualification for the quarter-finals.
Algeria will now face Nigeria in what promises to be a highly anticipated and open contest.
