Algeria/Slovenia: Privileged Relations and a Shared Will to Strengthen Bilateral Cooperation

Bilateral relations between Algeria and Slovenia have witnessed remarkable progress in recent years, marked by a positive dynamic driven by a shared commitment to enhance cooperation on both bilateral and multilateral levels.

This momentum is set to deepen further as Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune embarks on a state visit to Slovenia on Monday, at the invitation of his Slovenian counterpart, President Natasa Pirc Musar. The visit is expected to provide an opportunity to reinforce political dialogue and discuss key regional and international issues of mutual interest.

This strengthened partnership has been reflected in the opening of embassies in both capitals, high-level visits, and closer coordination on international matters—particularly within the UN Security Council, where both countries currently serve as non-permanent members.

Algeria and Slovenia share common positions on various global and regional challenges, including support for the Palestinian cause and a peaceful, just resolution to the Western Sahara issue, based on the principle of self-determination—a principle historically significant for both nations.

Further bolstering the relationship, Slovenian Prime Minister Robert Golob visited Algeria in May 2024, resulting in the signing of multiple cooperation agreements in areas such as energy, environment, higher education, scientific research, and artificial intelligence. The two countries also agreed to establish a joint commission and introduced a mutual visa exemption for diplomatic passport holders.

Parliamentary relations have also flourished, with friendship groups established and reciprocal visits between legislative leaders. Both governments reaffirm their shared values and mutual support, especially within the framework of the UN Security Council.
