Algeria Shines on Global Stage: Championing Peace at the UN Security Council

During its presidency of the UN Security Council in January 2025, Algeria reinforced its standing on the international stage as an influential and proactive actor in global decision-making. This was achieved through tangible diplomatic gains, resulting from its approach of advocating for just causes, promoting peaceful solutions to conflicts, and contributing to the development of an international order that upholds sustainable peace worldwide.

Algeria’s tenure at the helm of the UN body marked a pivotal turning point in the history of Algerian diplomacy, as the country fully leveraged its influence to engage effectively with international and regional issues, serving as a strong voice advocating for oppressed peoples, in line with the directives of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune.

Algeria for Middle East Peace

In the Middle East, Algerian diplomacy took the initiative by calling for meetings aimed at advancing political solutions under the auspices of the United Nations. It remained committed to its principles of respecting state sovereignty and rejecting foreign interventions, successfully passing numerous resolutions—some of which have been described as “precedents” in the history of the international forum.

In this context, Algeria held 16 meetings, including emergency sessions in response to the Zionist aggression on the Gaza Strip. It boldly advocated for the Palestinian people, exposing the atrocities committed against them before the eyes the world, and condemned threats to shut down the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA). Algeria emphasized the urgent need to enforce a ceasefire in Gaza, contributing to the launch of a UN-led political process aimed at achieving a just and lasting resolution to this complex issue.

Regarding Lebanon, Syria, and Yemen, Algeria called for supporting these countries, which are facing crises resulting from the repercussions of the Zionist occupation’s aggression against Palestine, and urged standing by them in the face of ongoing assaults.

Africa’s Voice Through Algeria

Based on its principles of defending Africa from within the UN platform and making its voice heard loudly on the international stage, Algeria organized nine meetings addressing the security and economic challenges troubling the continent.

In this regard, Algeria called for an inclusive dialogue in Sudan that ensures a smooth political transition and ends a conflict considered “one of the most violent in Africa,” expressing its “absolute” rejection of foreign interventions that have prolonged the crisis in the country.

Libya’s file also received its share of Algerian diplomatic efforts, which, thanks to its skill, managed to secure a historic decision to reinvest Libya’s frozen assets in international financial institutions and preserve them to support the stability of the Libyan people. Meanwhile, Algeria continued to vigorously defend the Sahrawi cause within the framework of respect for international legitimacy and relevant UN resolutions.

Algeria Leads Africa Against Terror

On an initiative from Algeria, the high-level meeting on combating terrorism in Africa, chaired by the Minister of State, Minister of Foreign Affairs, National Community Abroad, and African Affairs, Ahmed Attaf, on behalf of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, concluded with a presidential statement, marking a precedent that represents the highest level of international recognition of the President’s role as “the African Union’s Advocate for the Prevention of Terrorism.”

In a decisive step, the UN Security Council’s Counter-Terrorism Financing Committee adopted what is known as the “Algerian Guidelines,” which constitute a “tangible legacy of this mandate” and a “historic contribution” to the promotion of international peace and security.

From this perspective, Attaf pointed to the “great responsibility” borne by Algeria in the UN Security Council regarding the fight against the scourge of terrorism in Africa, warning that the threat posed by terrorism on the continent has “increased significantly in recent years, reflecting a real evolution among terrorist groups in Africa.”

Out of its commitment to act with full “responsibility and dedication,” the Algerian diplomacy worked to include additional issues on its agenda at the A3+ level, concerning the situations in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Colombia, as well as Haiti and Myanmar, calling for the necessity of international support to reach a political settlement for these intractable conflicts.

Algeria’s Diplomatic Triumph

Algeria’s presidency of the UN Security Council for an entire month was successful by all measures, receiving international recognition that praised its diligent efforts and distinctive role in managing pending issues and achieving international consensus on them.

As Algeria concludes its non-permanent membership on the Security Council on 31 December, it has demonstrated its status as a regional power influencing significant UN decisions. This underlines that its tenure was truly “a mandate faithful to the values and principles of justice enshrined in the United Nations Charter, as envisioned by the President of the Republic,” according to Ahmed Attaf.
