Algeria is set to introduce a revolutionary mobile payment system in January 2025, marking a significant step towards digital transformation. The “DZ MOB PAY” system, announced by Mohand Bourai, President of the Association of Banks and Financial Institutions (ABEF), will allow Algerian citizens to make secure payments and transfer money via smartphones.
This new system aligns with the country’s broader goals of financial inclusion and digitalization, aiming to simplify and secure daily transactions for individuals and merchants alike.
The mobile payment system will enable users to make payments by scanning QR codes, with three key institutions— the National Bank of Algeria (BNA), Al Salam Bank Algeria, and Algeria Post—leading the way in offering smartphone-based payment services.
The platform promises to be user-friendly and will be available to all users with mobile banking access. The new service will be free of charge for both users and merchants, encouraging widespread adoption.
This move builds on Algeria’s increasing digital payment ecosystem, with 2025 seen as a pivotal year for modernization. Since 2022, mobile payments have expanded, and with the introduction of the Switch Mobile platform in June 2024, interoperability across different banks is now possible.
By October 2024, Algeria had recorded a significant rise in electronic payments, with over 14.8 million online transactions and smartphone-based transactions exceeding 75 million. The official launch of “DZ MOB PAY” marks another milestone in the country’s digital payment journey.
