Algerian Minister of State, Minister of Energy, Mining, and Renewable Energies, Mohamed Arkab, received Russian Deputy Minister of Energy, Roman Marshavin, and his accompanying delegation at the ministry’s headquarters, as part of their participation in the fourth edition of the Intra-African Trade Fair (IATF 2025) held in Algiers. The meeting was attended by the Ambassador of the Russian Federation to Algeria, Secretary of State in charge of Mining Karima Bekir Tafer, Secretary of State in charge of Renewable Energies Noureddine Yassa, as well as senior officials from the ministry and the Sonatrach Group.
During the discussions, both sides explored ways to strengthen cooperation between Algeria and Russia in the fields of energy, mining, and renewable energies, highlighting prospects for development in line with the interests of both countries. They reaffirmed their commitment to deepening the energy partnership by examining various opportunities, particularly in hydrocarbons, exploration and production, field development, and the oil and gas industry in Algeria, through cooperation between Sonatrach and Russia’s Gazprom. They also addressed avenues of collaboration in renewable energies, including the development of green hydrogen and photovoltaic solar energy, along with regional electricity interconnection projects.
The meeting also provided an opportunity to discuss cooperation in the peaceful use of nuclear technologies and applications, especially in the medical field and the production of radiopharmaceuticals to combat cancer, through partnerships between Algeria’s Atomic Energy Commission and Russia’s Rosatom. Possibilities for developing local industries to produce equipment for these sectors were also examined. Minister Arkab stressed the importance of the strategic partnership binding Algeria and Russia, strengthened by the signing of the Declaration of Enhanced Strategic Partnership and several memorandums of understanding and joint action programs. He invited Russian companies active in the mining sector to contribute to the development of Algeria’s mining industry, from exploration and production to resource transformation.
For his part, Marshavin praised the vast potential for expanding cooperation and economic exchanges between Algeria and Russia, particularly in the energy and renewable energy sectors, expressing the strong interest of Russian companies in investing in the Algerian market, notably by supporting cooperation between Sonatrach and Gazprom. At the conclusion of the meeting, both sides welcomed the level of dialogue and coordination between the two countries in various international forums, especially within OPEC+ and the Gas Exporting Countries Forum, reaffirming their shared commitment to contributing to the stability of global oil and gas markets.
