Algeria: Rescue of 15 Illegal Immigration Candidates off the Northeast Coast of Boumerdes

ALGIERS, February 7, 2025 – Units from the Algerian Coast Guard, operating under the Naval Forces Command, executed a rescue and evacuation mission northeast of Cap Djennet (Boumerdes), successfully saving 15 individuals attempting illegal immigration from Somalia and South Sudan. This information was released in a statement by the Algerian Ministry of National Defense (MDN) on Friday.
“In accordance with the humanitarian objectives of the Coast Guard units under the Naval Forces Command, which focus on preserving lives at sea, a distress signal was received on February 6, 2025, at 3:20 PM by the Regional Center for Maritime Surveillance and Rescue Operations in the 1st Military Region. The signal reported endangered migrants located 27 nautical miles northeast of Cap Djennet (Boumerdes). A rescue and evacuation operation was promptly initiated under the supervision of the National Center for Maritime Surveillance and Rescue Operations of the Coast Guard,” the source explained.
“Two vessels from the territorial group of the Dellys Coast Guard intervened and successfully rescued 15 candidates for illegal immigration, comprising 14 Somali nationals, including two minors, and one individual from South Sudan,” the statement continued. It also noted that “the survivors were brought on board and transported to the port of Dellys (Boumerdes), where they received assistance and were subsequently transferred to Dellys Hospital for necessary medical care.”
