Algeria Regrets Confirmation of U.S. Position on the Western Sahara Conflict

Algeria expressed regret over the U.S. confirmation of its position, which considers the autonomy plan within the framework of Moroccan sovereignty as “the only solution to the Western Sahara conflict,” according to a statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the National Community Abroad, and African Affairs on Wednesday.

“Algeria has taken note of the reaffirmation by the U.S. Department of State of the U.S. position, considering the autonomy plan within the framework of Moroccan sovereignty as the only solution to the Western Sahara conflict,” the statement said.

The document added that Algeria “regrets the confirmation of this position by a permanent member of the Security Council, where it is normally expected that such a member demonstrates respect for international legality in general, and Security Council resolutions in particular.”

In this context, Algeria reaffirmed that the issue of Western Sahara “fundamentally pertains to an unfinished decolonization process and an unfulfilled right to self-determination. Indeed, Western Sahara remains a non-autonomous territory under the United Nations Charter, and the people of this territory retain the right to self-determination, as enshrined in General Assembly Resolution 1514 (XV) on the granting of independence to colonial countries and peoples.”

“Moving outside of this framework does not serve the cause of resolving this conflict, nor does it alter any of its fundamental elements, as recognized by the United Nations and its main organs, including the General Assembly, the Security Council, and the International Court of Justice,” the statement concluded.
