Algeria Reaffirms Firm Commitment to UN Counter-Terrorism Strategy

Algeria reaffirmed Wednesday, in New York, its firm commitment to implementing the United Nations’ global counter-terrorism strategy and relevant Security Council resolutions, expressing its readiness to share its experience in backing initiatives to eliminate terrorist threats.
Speaking at a Security Council session on “Threats to international peace and security caused by terrorist acts,” the delegation of the Permanent Mission of Algeria to the United Nations said that “effective counter-terrorism efforts must strike a balance between security and sustainable development,” based on the fundamental principle that “there can be no sustainable development without peace, and vice versa.”
The delegation further emphasized that fighting the terrorist threat requires a comprehensive and coordinated approach based on multiple pillars, particularly addressing root causes through a combination of security measures and development initiatives, while setting up genuine opportunities for all segments of society to permanently deprive terrorism of its breeding ground.
“Poverty is often a driver of extremism and indoctrination,” he noted.
Strengthening the response to technological challenges, it added, represents a crucial element in fighting this threat, “through coordinating international efforts to counter terrorists’ use of advanced and emerging technologies, which cannot be achieved without building the capacity of developing countries and transferring the necessary technologies for this purpose.”
The Algerian mission highlighted the importance of drying up terrorist groups’ funding sources, as money remains one of the primary recruitment tools that perpetuate terrorist threats.
In response to these threats, Algeria advocated for stronger cooperation with regional organizations, particularly the African Union (AU), “which established advanced institutional frameworks, including the African Center for the Study and Research on Terrorism (CAERT) and Afripol.”
Algeria emphasized that regional organizations are most capable of addressing the security challenges confronting them.
